Luxembourg Marathon

Today was Luxembourg marathon day, and the runners went straight past the end of our street. However, we walked into Glacie (10 minute walk) to see all the action. There were two versions, 42 kms for the real athletes and a 21km version for everyone else. There were over 9,000 participants and most of Luxembourg came out to cheer them on. The photo (above right) is of the oldest runner in the marathon, 99 year old Fauja Singh who was coming a distant last when I took his photo but he was looking strong and shuffling along somewhere between a walk and a jog. I hope the great man finishes. (No, I didn’t enter, maybe next year… yeh right).

PS: I just received a great message from Ghanaya Talewar below:

———————————————————————————

Hi Michael,

I’m Ghanaya Talewar, the runner on the Fauja’s right side.

Thanks to all the support from the people of Luxembourg, he managed to finish and set a new world record for the oldest person on the planet to complete a half-marathon !

———————————————————————————–

That’s fantastic news Ghanaya. Please tell Fauja we think he’s a star !!! We look forward to seeing him again next year.

This week in Lux – Hooray !!! (Come on Neil)

This week I spent all week in Luxembourg. I was also able to have a relaxing weekend at home as Saturday May 1st was a public holiday so all the shops were closed and today was Sunday which means… all the shops are closed !

So I have enjoyed watching the World Snooker Championships this weekend which has been live on BBC1, and I have been following the 28 year old Australian lad Neil Robertson , (info on him here) http://www.worldsnooker.com/player_list-8985.htm

I'll be following his progress and hope he can be the first Australian to win this prestigeous event. He is the first Australian to make the final since Eddie Charlton in 1975 (who lost that year to Ray Reardon).

Edit Tuesday: WELL DONE NEIL !!!   I sat up last night until 2am to watch the end of the final and I'm glad I did. It was an intense battle and our Aussie did the job. World Champ. Glad I was able to watch it live.

A Duck race??? Yes, a duck race.

Stop the waterStartDuck-endDucksPetrusse-valley

What does every man want to do on his birthday? Visit a plastic duck race… Yes Luxembourg (excitement capital of Europe) today put on its annual duck race, and there were over 9,000 entries in this years race.

Julie dragged me along to see this big event on the Luxembourg calendar where you register and pay for your entry on a web site (goes to charity) and you get a plastic duck in the race with a number on the bottom. Click the video (left) to see the start of this bizarre event.

This week in… Monaco

Team1NiceMonaco-harbourHelimj2HelimjF1trackCasino4am

This week I was in Monaco for our Quarterly EU sales meeting. Busy 3 days of work but on Friday instead of taking the bus back to Nice airport (40 minutes including winding roads) I lashed out and spent 105 Euro on my first ever helicopter ride. It was fantastic fun and Jesse and I were at the airport in less that 10 minutes. I took a video of the takeoff . Click to play.

Frankfurt Music Messe

Last week I was in Frankfurt for the biggest music industry trade show, the Frankfurt Messe. I had 28 meetings in 3 days so it was a very busy show. For that reason, I have no photos to show you. Sorry, all I saw was the inside of a meeting room for 3 days.

This week was… Baby stuff

Pram4Pram1Pram2Pram3Pram5

Julie is now 6 months pregnant, and it's time we got our act together and started buying all the required baby stuff. So we've had a big spend up. Last weekend we drove to Baby One in Trier http://www.babyone.de/ and purchased the car seat and locking base. Julie then spent some time researching for the pram which is a large purchase and found a great price on Amazon UK. So the boxes arrived this week with all the above items. (Please click the photos to see larger versions). The main reason for buying from the UK? At least the instructions are in English…

This week in… Utrecht

Mario-Me-JesseBugeraDemo-roomRudolf

Monday morning I drove the 3.5 hours to Utrecht in The Netherlands for a dealer conference with our partner company TM Audio. I spent Monday and Tuesday there and drove back late on Tuesday night (got home around midnight). It was a successful event and the showroom looked great with our products well displayed.

I've also just added some photos from the China trip below so please check them out.

Our new car

MeganefrontMeganebackMeganesideMeganedash

Today we picked up our new lease car, a Renault Megane Grandtour. It's an amazingly well featured car for the price. It sells here for € 21K and is a diesel automatic with on board GPS, cruise control, bluetooth and lots of other features. It's also very quiet inside for a diesel. We have waited 3 months for delivery as automatics are rare in Europe and we waited for them to make it for us. It's really a great car. Click to view larger pictures. Click HERE for the Renault web page with video and pics of our car.

Worst flight ever

My trip home from China yesterday was always going to be a long one. Lufthansa had a pilots strike in Europe and I was wait listed on a flight from Hong Kong back to Frankfurt. Unfortunately there were no seats due to the strike and I had to fly Hong Kong, London, Frankfurt, Luxembourg. Also couldn't get a direct flight from London back to Lux.

Anyway, made it back to Frankfurt without a hitch, but then the last short leg (only 25 minutes) was a disaster. The weather in Europe yesterday was wild winds up to 120 kms/h. The little Bombadier plane took off in Frankfurt and after 15 minutes of cruising at high altitude, became a rollercoaster on the descent. The last 15 minutes was hell. We were thrown around, up and down, losing our stomachs numerous times, passengers vomiting (fortunately not me), but the worst flight I ever had. The pilot quickly realised he couldn't land in that wind, and we accelerated upwards, eventually landing in Brussels half an hour later. Hours later we were put on a bus and driven back to Lux, but that was after everything that can go wrong did go wrong. Delays with lost luggage, bus delayed by hours. It took me the next 10 hours to get home. I arrived home around 11pm last night. Disappointing end to a fantastic week…
